In Historic Manors in Cornwall that required a large staff to keep them running, you would often find a servants’ staircase.
Many owners of these larger properties did not want their guests running into a maid on the staircase, so the solution was to have a separate staircase in the back of the house for the sole use of the servants. As these staircases were only used by staff, they were usually very narrow and dark.
A recent project found us uncovering a disused servants’ staircase in an Historic Manor in Cornwall.
