Cornwall has a rich heritage of listed buildings. These buildings have architectural and historical importance and if we lost them we would be losing a significant part of the Cornish character and cultural heritage.
Buildings are listed to protect them from unsympathetic alterations and demolition. This does not mean that a listed building cannot be altered, but there is legislation in place so that any proposed work is given full and proper consideration.
Listed buildings are classified in grades to show their relative importance. The three grades of listed buildings are:
- Grade I – Buildings of exceptional interest (e.g. Pendennis Castle, Falmouth)
- Grade II* - Buildings of particular importance and of more than special interest (e.g. Alverton Manor, Truro)
- Grade II – Buildings of special interest that warrant every effort being made to preserve them (take a look at our Portfolio for some examples of buildings of this grade that we have worked on)
There is a register known as a ‘Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historical Interest’, which is administered by a government agency, Historic England. This register will inform you if your property is a listed building. If you would like to find out more information on this have a look at the Historic England website.
