Lime Rendering
Our Lime Rendering Services on historic buildings in Cornwall provide protection form the elements and are a breathable application for existing substrates. As a rule, we do encourage keeping existing stonework exposed and having Lime re-pointing undertaken, but in some cases a 3-coat Lime render in Cornwall is required.
The stages of Lime application for a Lime render is similar to a Lime plaster. Following the removal of existing claddings, a drying out period is required before the dobbing out of smaller holes is undertaken.
The application of Lime rendering is usually a 3-coat process. The 1st coat, which contains natural horse hair for stabilisation and adhesion purposes, is applied to level out some of the unevenness of the substrate, followed by a scratching process to create a key for the next coat. The 2nd and 3rd coats of Lime render are then applied to create an even flatter surface. Appropriate time needs to be given to allow each coat to dry.
During the Lime rendering process picking out quoins, stones and lintels brings more character to the building.
Once the Lime render application process has been given the appropriate amount of time to dry, a Breathable or Mineral Paint System can be applied if required.
