Our Restoration Works in Cornwall take us to some very scenic and historic locations. Two of our current projects are situated in the Historic Port of Charlestown.

Building Restoration Charlestown

Charlestown Harbour is a Grade II listed harbour in a Conservation Area and World Heritage Site in Cornwall and is an unspoiled example of a late Georgian working port. Construction of this harbour took place between 1791 and 1801 by Charles Rashleigh, a local land owner and member of the notable Rashleigh Family, due to the growth of the local mining industry. It was originally constructed for the exportation of copper and the importation of coal. After the local coal mining industry fell on hard times the port was used for the transportation of China Clay.

By the 19th century, the population of Charlestown had significantly increased, and various businesses had been established in workshops and sheds around the harbour. These businesses included a fish smokery, ship building, brick making and lime curing.

Charlestown Harbour is now a favourite within the filming industry and has been used in many movies and television programmes including The Eagle Has Landed, Disney’s The Three Musketeers, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Poldark.

Our first restoration project in Charlestown is at the Grade II* listed former Methodist Chapel, originally built in 1827.

The works we have undertaken so far have consisted of removing the existing cement-based pointing applications and introducing a Natural Lime/sand mortar pointing application. Our Lime application will enhance the beauty of this historic building in Cornwall and maintain the breathability of the structure.

Our second restoration project in Charlestown is at this beautiful Grade II listed Georgian terraced cottage that overlooks the picturesque Port of Charlestown.
